Why choose My Treasure Ted?

My Treasure Ted® is more than just a teddy bear. Designed for individuals with various sensory needs, our plush bear stimulates the senses, fostering relaxation and connection.

Research shows that soft toy animals can have great benefits for people with dementia, autism or many other extra-sensory conditions. Designed to stimulate one or more of the senses, they can promote feelings of relaxation and pleasure, and are considered a form of therapy – not merely ‘playing’ with a toy.

According to Dementia UK, ‘caring’ for a doll or soft toy can give people with dementia a renewed sense of purpose and help them connect with the outside world. Autism Speaks also found that these types of toys benefit children on the spectrum by helping them engage with their senses, provide feedback to their sensory systems, and regulate their sensory needs.

I have personal experience of a parent being diagnosed with vascular dementia. I understand the challenges of supporting the changing behaviour of someone with this condition.

Even the usually pleasant experience of buying a gift for mum became stressful. Long internet searches proved fruitless. Would she lose a pretty necklace? Would a new blouse be ignored? Choosing a gift for mum became harder as her symptoms progressed. I felt frustrated - I still wanted to buy her nice things but couldn’t find much that would be of use to her. So, I got to work designing a teddy bear that would be particularly suitable for people living with dementia.

My main aim was to create an appealing bear that could offer comfort with cuddles and various fidget activities. Secondly, I wanted to provide more gift choices to people who are affected by someone with a diagnosis of dementia, or conditions with extra sensory needs.

As a result, My Treasure Ted® was born – my personal legacy to my dear late mum.
